Misc. Questions asked in Kynseed discord
(join here, we just got some kynseed emotes!)
Sorry I don't read most forum stuff, so I have no idea if they answered any of this somewhere in the forums (doesn't hurt to have the answer in multiple places, anyway!), but I figured I could collect the info from discord lmao This is mostly from October-December, as I got super tired while doing this so I quit when I hit September, but I've seen a lot of the same questions being asked in the discord, so I thought it would be worthwhile to have a place with the answers collected, and forum users can see it too this way.
Since Sunlag took care of the major questions, this post will just be devoted to questions asked in discord. All quotes are direct from one of the devs, otherwise I've paraphrased what they said (Just to make it easier to read.)
And as always, nothing is set in stone!
Are mods allowed? Mod support?
ShowThe devs have said "we are all for mods but are not doing anything special in that area as there is simply no time to support it fully at least until after release." So, they're okay with mods but no official mod support.
Does the game have a moon cycle that affects the world?
ShowNone originally planned, but since the suggestion was made, they'll take a look into possible ways it could play into the world, and go from there. Either way, you won't be able to see the moon.
What is a "region" in Kynseed?
ShowThe Vale is the area in the Prologue and is split up into 13 parts, but there are some parts you can't access until later. Your farm is also a region, and the village is split up into 3 regions (east is shops, west is npc families, and there's a region for the festival green.) In east candlewych there are also shop-owning NPCs. They didn't say anything more on the topic of regions than this, since they want to leave it up to us to explore!
Will being shrunken have a purpose?
ShowThere will be a use for being shrunken in the full game.
Multiplayer?
Show"For launch there will be no online or multiplayer features, but are open to ideas for after launch, and have already considered a co-op bodyguard option....but that's not a confirmation nor anything to consider til the main game is done."
For certain, direct interaction between player worlds is not going to happen (i.e. visiting another player's world from your own world). Burying things for others to find has been suggested, but for the most part all thought of MP is super far back on the burner until the game is done.
Can you hire NPCs to go with you on adventures?
ShowIf an NPC likes you enough, they will be willing to go with you. How much they need to like you is determined by the NPC's hidden stats and Traits (which you can uncover) that make them more brave/adventerous/etc. So they might not need to love you to want to come along. Additionally, if you have a good reputation, you won't need to seduce them to get them to come along. (lmfao)
Hiring NPCs, rather than just asking them to come along, is under consideration but not confirmed.
How much combat will Kynseed have?
ShowYou don't have to fight, but if you want the best stuff, then you may have to. You can send NPCs to gather instead, though. Overall, they want to steer the combat away from feeling "grindy."
What backer level do I need to be at to get dev forum access?
ShowLand Shaper ($33) or higher.
How will winter affect the game? Will temperature be an issue?
ShowNo seasonal garments, so no temperature issues, but some winter prep will be needed if you rely on certain ingredients that don't grow in that season, and those items will also become much more expensive to buy in Winter.
Will your children be affected by the way you act and respond to it?
ShowAs the children are characters that potentially become the player, they won't directly respond to your actions (i.e. they won't sabotage things out of spite). However, your children will suffer the reputation created by you, and can either atone or follow the same path when you take control of them.
How evil can I be? Can I murder my spouse and remarry?
ShowThere's no NPC murder, and you can't draw weapons in havens, but you can be hated for other things. Your character is "neutral" by default, there's no world to save, and so how you live your life is how people remember you.
How will NPC aging/new generations work?
ShowThe system hasn't been worked on at the time they answered, but they are looking to have there be randomization of NPCs, with only certain family Traits (i.e. ginger hair) being passed down. If a bloodline has no heirs then "long lost relatives" will move in.
What are some ways Kynseed is like Fable?
ShowNPC reactions, same sex relationships, and farts for starters.
early access 2018?
Show"We've been getting a boat load of new assets in each week that all require polish and implementation (most recently a fair bit of NPC art and environment art!), not to mention a ton of code stuff remaining that we want to make sure we get juuuust right before releasing the game to the eager masses. But yeah, we wanna make sure we're doing the game proper justice so we figured the best thing was to give ourselves a bit more wiggle room and set sights on early early 2018. But as soon as we have a more solid date you can definitely expect us to shout it from the mountaintops."
What year/time period is Kynseed set?
Show"It's so far in the future there has been more than one apocalypse."
What languages will Kynseed be available in?
Show"yet to fully decide but desired would be....french, spanish, german, polish, russian, chinese, japanese, italian, brazilian portuguese. depends on demand a bit" They want to cater to as many as possible, but no promises about any of it, as it's still pretty early.
How does paying Fairweather in years/"life tax" work?
ShowAt the end of the year, "you just wake up in Spring of the relevant year and its as though you were never gone. your family and npcs may comment but those years passed like a dream." Meanwhile, NPCs will have aged (or possibly died).
How does adopting a kid work?
ShowYou can adopt a kid anytime, but that kid won't get your bloodline abilities (stuff you learned).
How does death work?
ShowIf you die in combat, fairweather will revive you in exchange for 1 year of your life, or 2 years if you want to keep the stuff you found. For actual death, ravens turn up to tell of them, and death is celebrated in Quill society. The deceased are returned to nature, but they don't want to give away any more than that. Suffice to say, they do want it to make an emotional impact.
When your character dies, their widow left behind becomes the child's (who is now the player) mom/dad. They will eventually die as well (from old age, or if you send them off to gather someplace dangerous maybe.).
Can I be immortal?
ShowNo. A major part of the game is the "generational" aspect, and so to have an immortal player would go against that.
(but hey, mod idea, anyone?)
Is there a main storyline?
ShowSort of. It's not a "go from point a to point b" type of storyline.
Is there a dating system?
ShowYes, and don't be late!
Additionally, there's an intercourse system ("playful but tasteful") in which you can affect the outcome (chance of conception, your child's stats, etc), by heeding different superstitions in the game. Different people will be harder/easier to seduce, but if you can do it then yes you could marry anyone. Also same-sex marriage is possible.
How does time flow?
Show4 season per year, 14 days per season, 60 years per character (unless you die in combat or buy items from fairweather).
DLC?
Show"there will be no fleecing or microtransactions or stupidly overpriced DLC. my view is....you pay for a game and you get the whole game. If theres an expansion pack that adds value then sure, a small price to cover its costs is fair...but dont think of such stuff first. just make the best game you can and worth the money"
At what point do the soundtrack and lore books release? With EA or at the full release?
ShowProbably nearer full release (so they can have more stuff!)
Expected Price?
ShowPrice is probably going to be about 15 pounds.
Can I raise dragons?
ShowNo, but you can farm their poo.
How will weekdays be named?
ShowAt the time of the question, they hadn't been named yet, but they will be named after Fae Goddesses
There are mines? Cave spiders?
ShowVale mines are handmade (as in not procedurally generated), but later there will be lower levels than can be "unblocked" and might make good shortcuts. The mines are safe, "sort of." Delving too deep may be dangerous for encounters with mining Fae or "Knockers."
System Specs?
Show"Regarding system specs. I'm hoping that it won't be too system intensive and if we do fancier effects then they can be toggleable, but there is definitely going to be more going on in early access than the prototype in terms of navigation and objects updating which may make it a bit slower. However, there'll likely be some more optimising for this build versus the prototype so it might balance out, will have to wait and see!"
How much of a role do fae play?
ShowFae like shopping and human goods, so they'll mostly be your customers. Beyond that is up to us to find out!
Will anything be time dependent (i.e. will things unlock based on what generation/year you're in?)
ShowSome seasonal stuff, and an idea for a time related thing, but nothing certain/detailed yet.
PC Platforms we can purchase kynseed from?
ShowThey've mentioned on discord: steam, itchio, and game jolt, they think for now, with steam being first. They'd like to look into selling Kynseed through their own site, but said it's just a distant possibility, and would be a lot of work.
Will there be a map, and can we mark the map?
ShowThere is a map for each region (if you find it), but they haven't decided if you'll be able to make marks/pins/etc on it.
Will there be Demon Doors like in the Fable games?
ShowThey're hesitant to do such a direct reinterpretation of a core Fable element, but something within the same spirit is possible. Nothing specific yet.
Can I have a kid and then just bulk buy from Fairweather?
ShowNo, he only offers 3 items each year, and he won't offer the better stuff early on, so if you want the good stuff, you'll have to wait.
Achievements?
ShowThere are achievements/trophies, but they're in a different location. So you'll have a place to show off your competition wins.
Farm/Home customization?
ShowThere's no tree chopping, and no new buildings, but upgrades through Mr. Fairweather are a possibilty. Nothing decided yet, but it's on the table for future discussion.
Can I own everything at once?
ShowYou can own all four shops in the Vale, and each of the four shop types in each village if you want, and you can hire staff to run them, but it will take some micromanaging. Fairweather will also have items to help. You can't own rival shops. The buildings aren't abandoned and waiting for you to buy them, and they are expensive. You can work in the shops without owning them, but it means you don't get to dictate prices, etc.
What's the currency?
ShowBrass. (they're fed up of gold pieces in RPGs)
Can the businesses be bought out from me, or do the deeds always pass down?
ShowPasses down, but the ability to sell your business may be a possibility, too early to say.
Can we buy/live in non-Vale regions?
ShowYou can buy property outside The Vale, but not live there. "Uprooting the Kynseed and planting it on another farm might be something we consider but at the moment not on our list. Your home should be ancestral." but later said: "moving home is just adding way too much work, we have to draw lines somewhere. Let's keep it ancestral." so I'd say that's a no lmao
Does the Kynseed refer to your family lineage?
ShowYes, it's bound to your bloodline, and so its roots go deeper the more generations pass.
