My Impressions so far.
Some of this I've also posted in the Welcome to the beta thread, but I thought I would include them here as well anyway, else my full thoughts on the game at the moment would be all over the place, and that might give a skewed view if someone only read one part of it.
OK,with that out of the way, here are my thoughts.
-Time. At the moment I feel that the days are a little too short. This could be helped if time stood still during certain activities, like reading a book,in your inventory and even when talking to people. The last one mainly with an eye on the future updates when there is more dialogue. I don't want to feel rushed to read what someone has to say and maybe miss information they share. This also goes for reading a book. Now that I've gotten a little more used to the game and know where most things and people are located,I can finish the tasks I get everyday most days,BUT this is without really interacting with any of the people at all, except when needed for a task. So the days could be just a tiny bit longer coupled with the pausing time at certain activities so you don't rush from task to task and then back home to get to bed.
-A toggle target button. I feel this would be very useful. Especially when trying to talk to dad while he is milking the cow,or trying to talk to someone who is standing next to a stove.
-The controls. I still struggle a little bit with the controls. Mainly when interacting with people,I really don't like having to hold the button down while choosing an option. This caused me to gift the wrong item to people or feed the wrong food to animals. Especially since sometimes it only takes a little twitch and it picks whatever you were on at that moment, and you don't always know what exactly you did. I think this could use an option,if you prefer the holding the button down you can keep it like that, but if now, then toggle the option on.
-The music. I absolutely love all of the music in the game! The only part that bugs me is the sudden and abrupt change in music when entering shops. A better solution since there are no loading screens while entering buildings,is in my opinion,to fade the music out and the shop music in when entering. This makes the transition a lot more smooth and doesn't take you out of the game thinking what the hell just happened? I also had a few times happen where the music just stopped,I don't know what exactly happened,if all the music was done playing and it doesn't loop,or of it was a bug,but in a game like this, with such beautiful and soothing music,I don't really want to have any time where there is no music playing(except maybe in certain areas for effect or something similar).
-The mini-games. I quite like the blacksmithing and cooking mini-games already, but I think there are some rooms for improvement. I'm sure visual wise they will be changed in future updates, but the basics that are there now I like. The cooking mini-game has one thing that REALLY bothers me,and that is not being able to remove ingredients from the pot. Sometimes I missclick on an ingredient, and all the other ingredients in the pot are already wasted. Other times it happens just because I just finished making something and I accidentally double click to get out of the created item screen and end up putting another ingredient in again. For the blacksmithing mini-game,I feel like maybe it would be better to have to walk to the different stations instead of just clicking on it,because at the moment it feels too much like a game thing, which,at least for me, ruins the immersion.
-Exploration. I love the world you guys created, from the looks to the backstory, even with the little we know about it right now,it makes me want to go and discover this world. I always love exploration in games, and so far the feeling I get walking around in the Vale is amazing. I constantly catch myself going "Oooh, what's this over here? There might be something over there!" Which is just the best feeling to have when playing a game for me,and it makes me want to look literally everywhere. Even if it's just a proverb at the end of a long tunnel,it makes me feel giddy. Speaking of which,I love the proverb system. This is such an interesting way of gathering information about things in the game. Why bother looking something up on a wiki when you can just explore to your hearts content and find proverbs to suck you further into the world while still finding out where stuff could be found. It is the same with the books,I love them so far, even the jokey ones. There is one particular book I found pretty late in my playthrough, which really took me by surprise. It made me put so many things in a different context, and made me suspect some things about the story. I won't really get into it more, since I don't want to spoil it for anyone reading this. So yeah, loving the exploration so far!
-The farming. At the moment the farming is rather bare-bones,which isn't a bad thing in & of itself. I do suspect there might be more to it later, since there is such a thing as a star rating for the things you grow. I am looking forward to find out what it will turn into in the end. I do like the basics that are there at the moment, even little things like not having to water wheat. It would be great if there will be some plants which could be very hard to grow,or take a lot of work. Like you would have to water it more then once a day or do something else to maintain it during growth. I feel that a lot of farming sim games make growing everything too easy, and could use some challenging plants to grow. I know this isn't mainly a farming game, but one can hope :).
-The pets. So far I've only gotten the dog, since I'm a dog person. I like that he can help you look for things to dig up,but it would be great if it was like a trait or skill it could level up. The higher the level the more chance it has to actually find something. A lot of times I would dig and didn't find anything salvageable, which is fine, but it would be nice if a dog with a high level skill would not react to these places,or at least not as often. And one thing I hope is that it would be possible to get different kind of dogs/cats. I of course didn't expect there to be options in this beta, but for the full game I would love a couple of different dogs/cats.
-The fishing. THANK YOU! I dreaded the fishing at first, because in a lot of these types of games it has it's own mini-game,and nine out of ten times it is just frustrating. I loved the simple and elegant way it is handled in this game.
-The UI. I like a lot of the current UI,but there are some things that could be improved greatly. Stuff like your amount of brass should get a small box around it,to make it easier to distinguish. The toolbar could be smaller, right now it takes up a lot of space. While reading a book,I think it would be a great idea if it had itīs own "box" instead of covering the entire screen. Maybe even make the borders in a way that it looks like an opened book. I would also love some way of showing where you are on the map, once you've unlocked all the mapstones in that area.
-The story. I already touched on this under exploration but I am in love with the world of Kynseed. The little intro to the prologue was great,I loved the art style and nursery rhyme-esque way of the writing. All the little things you discover by talking to people and reading books are also amazing,it just makes me want to learn more about the world. I also loved the cliffhanger at the end of the prologue. It was a perfect cutting off point for now,but also made me crave the next phase.
-Visuals. I really like the look of everything in this game, from the trees to the houses to the villagers. Some look lovely while others look positively creepy. You don't often see such a difference in these types of games. It usually goes for one main look of all the people, and these main villagers really were all over the place, which I loved.
-The task system. This is one of my favorite things in the game,it's so simple and yet,I felt urged to complete all the tasks each day, because I didn't want to disappoint my new dad. The potential for this is also very big. Especially once you grow up and you can set tasks for your own kids. In too many of these games your family is absolutely useless, here, they actually pull their weight!
Those are my thoughts so far,I've only actually played through the entire prologue once so far, since I kept restarting due to bugs,or just because I wanted to see if I could find out what triggered a certain bug. Despite that,I already have almost 20 hours into the beta so far,and loving every second of it. The last time I played it I decided to just play through it once without actually looking to break things, and the time just slipped away from me. I think I played about 2-3 hours straight while I thought it was like half an hour,it just flew by. Which to me,is a mark of a great game.
I will update this if I think of anything else, and I'll be eagerly anticipating any and all future updates! both big and small! :D.
